Worth Keeping

Observations, convictions & the occasional truth

Two decades of building brands, companies, and creative work distilled into the lines that stuck. Not motivational posters. Not LinkedIn platitudes. Just the things that proved true under pressure.

The Convictions

The ideas that survived long enough to become beliefs. Each one earned in the field, not borrowed from a book.

“The best brands don't follow trends. They make them irrelevant.”

Written after watching a client spend six months chasing a competitor's rebrand instead of building something original. The brands that last twenty years are the ones that were never trying to look current. They were trying to look like themselves.

“Creativity isn't a department. It's the whole damn building.”

Said during a keynote at AAF Louisville. The idea that creativity lives in one corner of the org chart is the reason most companies produce forgettable work. When the accountant thinks creatively about process, when the sales team thinks creatively about relationships, that is when a company becomes dangerous.

2017

“If your strategy fits on a slide, it's not a strategy. It's a wish.”

Born from years of watching agencies present "strategies" that were really just mood boards with bullet points. Real strategy is messy. It involves trade-offs. It says no to things. If it makes everyone in the room comfortable, it is not a strategy.

business

2020

“The distance between good and great is the willingness to be uncomfortable.”

From a coaching session with a creative director who had plateaued. Good is safe. Good is repeatable. Great requires you to risk looking foolish, to push past the version everyone already likes, to sit in the discomfort of not knowing if it works yet.

leadership

2022

“Build things that outlast your attention span.”

A reminder to myself during a period of launching too many things at once. The world rewards builders, not starters. Anyone can begin. The rare ones finish. The rarest ones maintain.

creativity

On Creativity

The practice of making something from nothing, and having the taste to know the difference.

Creativity is not a talent. It is a discipline. It is showing up when the muse does not, making decisions when the options are infinite, and having the conviction to defend work that the room does not understand yet. Twenty years of creative practice has taught one thing above all: the best ideas feel obvious in hindsight and terrifying in the moment.

02.01

“Art is the only honest conversation left.”

In a world of curated feeds and corporate messaging, art remains the last space where honesty is not just tolerated but required.

02.02

“The best ideas feel obvious — after someone else has them.”

Hindsight makes everything look inevitable. The truth is that every breakthrough idea was once a weird suggestion that most people in the room wanted to kill.

02.03

“Perfection is the enemy of shipped.”

Not an excuse for sloppy work. A reminder that the world never sees the version you kept polishing in private. Ship it. Learn. Ship again.

02.04

“The work speaks. Make sure it's saying something worth hearing.”

Portfolio reviews reveal everything. Not just skill: taste, conviction, and whether someone has something to say or is just filling space beautifully.

03

business

On Business

Strategy, growth, and the uncomfortable truth about building things that last.

Business is not about being busy. It is about being clear. Clear about what you offer, who you serve, and what you refuse to do. The ventures that survived (Omythic, Web Wishery, Agency AEO) all share one trait: they started with a point of view, not a business plan. The ones that failed started with spreadsheets and no soul.

03.01

“The market doesn't reward the careful. It rewards the clear.”

Caution is not a strategy. Clarity is. The companies that win are not the ones with the best safety nets. They are the ones with the clearest message.

03.02

“Your competition isn't other companies. It's indifference.”

Most brands lose not to competitors but to the scroll. To the skip. To the "I will look at that later" that never comes. The real enemy is being forgettable.

04

branding

On Branding

Identity, positioning, and the art of making the invisible visible.

A brand is not what you say about yourself. It is what people say about you when you leave the room. The work of branding is the work of shaping that conversation, through design, language, experience, and the thousand small decisions that add up to a feeling. Most companies get the logo right and everything else wrong.

04.01

“A brand without conviction is just a logo with anxiety.”

The logo is the easy part. The hard part is knowing what you stand for and being willing to lose customers over it.

04.02

“Design is not decoration. It's decision-making made visible.”

Every design choice is a business choice. Color, type, spacing, imagery: each one communicates values whether you intended it to or not.

04.03

“Every great brand started as a bet nobody else would make.”

Nike was a bet on athletes. Apple was a bet on taste. Omythic was a bet on meaning over marketing. The safe bets produce safe brands. Safe brands are forgotten brands.

05

leadership

On Leadership

The weight of decisions, the loneliness of conviction, and why culture is not a poster.

Leadership is not a title. It is a tax. You pay it in sleep, in certainty, in the comfort of being liked. The best leaders are not the most charismatic. They are the most consistent. They make the same decision on a Tuesday that they would make on a Friday. They protect the culture when it is expensive to do so.

05.01

“Lead with taste. Everything else is negotiable.”

Taste is the one thing you cannot teach, cannot fake, and cannot committee your way into. It is the filter through which every decision should pass.

05.02

“If you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room. Or you built the room wrong.”

Hiring people smarter than you is not humility. It is strategy. The leader's job is not to have the best ideas. It is to create the environment where the best ideas survive.

05.03

“Culture eats strategy for breakfast, but taste sets the table.”

A riff on Drucker. Strategy without culture is a memo. Culture without taste is a beer pong table in the lobby and a "we are a family" slide in the deck.

06

life

On Life

Bourbon, art, fatherhood, and the things that matter when the laptop closes.

The work matters. But it is not the only thing that matters. A life well lived requires the same intentionality as a brand well built: clarity of values, consistency of action, and the willingness to edit ruthlessly. The bourbon, the cigars, the late nights in the studio: those are not distractions from the work. They are the fuel for it.

06.01

“Build things that outlast your attention span.”

In an age of pivots and side hustles, the rarest thing is commitment. Pick something. Stay with it long enough to get good. Then stay longer.

06.02

“Bourbon doesn't solve problems. But it does improve the meeting.”

Not medical advice. Not business advice. Just an observation from a thousand late-night conversations where the best ideas showed up after the second pour.
